A Baroque complex, Christianenburg Castle, stands on an elevation south of the old town of Eisenberg in the Saale-Holzland district of Thuringia. Its strategically advantageous location once made it an important point along ancient trade routes and continues to shape the townscape today.

History+

The origins of Christianenburg date back to the 12th century, when a castle was erected on this site. This medieval fortification, surrounded by walls and a moat, underwent several transformations, with a new kitchen being built in 1589. A transformation of the ensemble occurred between 1680 and 1707 under Duke Christian of Saxe-Eisenberg, who had the castle converted into a Baroque three-wing complex.
