Christiansborg Palace
Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen is a unique structure that unites Denmark's three branches of government under one roof: the executive, legislative, and judiciary. This makes it the only representative building of its kind in the world, housing not only the Folketing parliament but also the Supreme Court, an office for the Prime Minister, and royal reception rooms.
History+
The origins of the current palace date back to 1167, when Archbishop Absalon, considered the founder of Copenhagen, had a castle built on the present-day palace island. This fortification, which came into the possession of the Danish crown under Valdemar the Great, was razed in the 14th century after a war against the Hanseatic League. The Copenhagen Castle was later built on its foundations. In 1736, King Christian VI had the first Christiansborg Palace constructed as a magnificent Rococo palace, which, however, fell victim to a devastating fire in 1794. A second Christiansborg Palace was built between 1806 and 1828 in the Neoclassical style and played an important role in Denmark's transition from absolutism to parliamentarism, but it also burned down in 1884. The current building was constructed from 1906 to 1937, with the reconstruction being controversially debated and its Neo-Baroque design still criticized today.
