Colombier Castle

The origins of Colombier Castle date back a long way, with the construction of an initial structure presumed to be between the 11th and 13th centuries. The current complex presents itself as the result of numerous transformations over the centuries. Particularly distinctive are the Gothic elements in the southeastern area, which originated in the 15th and 16th centuries. The striking entrance tower dates from 1543. In the 17th and 19th centuries, the castle underwent further changes, with the inner courtyard temporarily used as a parade and exercise ground. Since 1824, part of the complex has served as a barracks, which is still in military use today, housing Infantry Officer School 1 and Infantry Recruit School 5.

Colombier Castle is situated in the municipality of Colombier in the Boudry district, canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 459 m above sea level.

Today, visitors can explore a military museum and a cotton museum within Colombier Castle. Despite its military use, parts of the castle are accessible to the public.
