Compesières Castle in Bardonnex, Canton Geneva, is a historic building with a special past as a Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller. It is situated on a gentle hill and is characterized by its well-preserved structure, which has retained its original character despite numerous alterations.

History+

The origins of Compesières Castle possibly date back to the late 13th century, when a massive, tower-like stone building was erected. In the 12th century, a local nobility named after Compesières existed, but their residence is unknown. Their estates passed into the possession of the Bishops of Geneva before 1200. A decisive turn in the history of the site occurred in 1270, when Bishop Aymo of Menthonay donated the church of Compesières to the Order of St. John, forming the basis for the establishment of a commandery. The Order, known for nursing the sick and caring for pilgrims, possessed numerous castle-like settlements. In the 17th century, the building underwent significant renovations. After a temporary dissolution by the Bernese in 1536, the Order regained its property in 1564 and was able to hold it until the French Revolution. A comprehensive restoration in 1955 helped restore the castle to its original appearance, including the reconstruction of disruptive elements.
