Corbières Castle

Corbières Castle, a historic structure with a long and eventful history, is picturesquely situated in the municipality of the same name in the Gruyère district of the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It is a testament to medieval rule and once shaped an extensive region.
History+
The first written mention of Corbières dates back to 1115, when the lord of the village donated land for the founding of a priory in Rougemont. This suggests that the lordship of Corbières was established in the 11th or early 12th century. The Corbières dynasty was characterized by its generosity towards the church, manifested in numerous donations to abbeys such as Rougemont and Humilimont. Their possessions extended over vast territories, even though Vuippens separated as an independent lordship around 1224/1225. In 1250, the Corbières pledged allegiance to the Count of Savoy. After Conon's death around 1258, the lordship was divided among his sons, leading to a weakening. Around 1326, the lords of Corbières sold their shares, and the plague in 1349, along with wartime conflicts, shaped the region. In the late 14th century, two important branches of the Corbières family died out. Following a murder case in 1375, the lordship fell to the Count of Savoy. In 1454, the House of Savoy sold Corbières to Count Francois of Gruyères. Due to the increasing indebtedness of Count Michel of Gruyères, Corbières came into the possession of Fribourg in 1553.
