Coswig Castle

The origins of the current castle site date back to 1187, when a castle named Cossewiz was mentioned there. In 1215, Coswig was designated an oppidum and developed into the most important city of the Anhaltian Ascanians north of the Elbe. Between 1603 and 1793, Coswig belonged to the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst. The current castle was built between 1667 and 1677. It served as a widow's residence until the 19th century and combined older Renaissance elements in the northern main wing with influences of French Baroque architecture. A transformation occurred from 1874 onwards, when parts of the castle were converted into a prison. During this time, the south wing was extended by two floors.
