Crassenstein Castle

The origins of Crassenstein date back to 1177, when a castle at this site was first documented and belonged to the noble family of Stromberg. In 1419, it was sold to Heinrich III von Wendt. The von Wendt family, whose roots trace back to Knight Heinrich I von Wendt, a castellan of the Bishop of Münster, shaped the history of the estate. Franz III von Wendt zu Crassenstein, married to Anna von Ketteler, is considered the probable builder of the current castle. After the Crassenstein line died out in 1710, the inheritance passed to Franz Egon II von Wendt zu Holtfeld and later to Franz Arnold.
