Northeast of Gmunden in Upper Austria, Cumberland Castle stands as an example of Neo-Gothic Tudor architecture. Originally built as an exile residence for the Crown Prince of Hanover, it now serves as a nursing home.

History+

The Prussian annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866 forced King George V into exile. The royal family settled in the Salzkammergut in 1868. In 1882, construction began on Cumberland Castle as a new residence for Ernst August, Crown Prince of Hanover and 3rd Duke of Cumberland. Designed by architect Ferdinand Schorbach, the castle was built in Neo-Gothic Tudor style and occupied in 1886. It served as the residence for the exiled Crown Prince until his death in 1923. In 1930, it was converted into a Guelphic House and Family Museum. During the Nazi era, from 1938, it functioned as a regional training castle and from 1940 to 1945 as a military hospital.
