Dardagny Castle

The first documented mention of a Lord of Dardagny, Aymon, occurred in 1280. By the end of the 13th century, specifically 1298, two separate, fortified houses, separated by an alley, stood on the site of the current castle, belonging to the lords André Corbière and Michaud de Livron. With the Reformation in 1536, the area came under the rule of the Republic of Geneva. In 1646, Amadeus Favre united the two lordships. His son Daniel began transforming the two manor houses into a single castle in 1655 by raising the buildings to a common height, adding three corner towers, and connecting the wings with a wooden gallery. After passing to the Lullin family, Jean Vasserot acquired the property in 1721. His son, who inherited the castle in 1731, transformed it into a magnificent 18th-century manor house. He demolished the stair tower, created an entrance hall with a grand ceremonial staircase, and added a balcony to the street side. He also enclosed the inner courtyard to create a banquet hall, the Knights' Hall, adorned with frescoes. From 1775, the lordship passed to Jean-Philippe Horneca, who transferred it to his son Jacques-Antoine Horngacher in 1779. The latter had an organ installed in the Knights' Hall in 1780. In 1848, Jean-Louis Fazy acquired the castle. The municipality of Dardagny purchased the property in 1904. A plan to demolish the castle for a new school in 1916 failed due to protests. After years of uncertainty, restoration was decided between 1925 and 1926, carried out in six stages from 1926 to 1931. The restored castle was opened in 1932 and classified as a historical monument in 1935.

Today, Dardagny Castle houses the municipal town hall and a school, thus being a vibrant part of local life.
