Darfeld Castle

The origins of Darfeld Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when the Knights of Darfeld, ministerials of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, resided here. In 1553, the estate came into the possession of the von Vörden family, under whom Jobst von Vörden had the first castle built. After a change of ownership in 1651 to Count Adrian von Flodorf, who was in conflict with the Bishop of Münster, the castle temporarily reverted to the seller. It was not until 1680 that the cathedral bursar Goswin Droste zu Vischering finally acquired the estate. From 1690, it became the main residence of the Droste zu Vischering family.
