Demerthin Castle

The origins of the estate date back to 1468, when Frederick II granted the fief to the von Klitzing family. This family developed the manor house into a Renaissance residence from the 16th century onwards. The castle acquired its present appearance in 1604, largely driven by Katharina von Oppen. She was able to finance the new construction because her deceased husband Andreas von Klitzing left behind an economically successful estate in 1586. The builder is honored in an inscription above the portal. The castle remained in the possession of the von Klitzing family until 1945, before it was expropriated after World War II and taken over by the Red Army. The complex deteriorated in the post-war period until the municipality took ownership of the castle in 1993. Extensive restoration began in 1992, with facade work completed in 2004.
