Dermbach Castle

The history of Dermbach Castle began in 1707 when the Fulda Prince-Abbot Adalbert von Schleifras initiated its construction. The Fulda Monastery required the building as an administrative office. Konstantin von Buttlar, who moved in in 1717, had the complex surrounded by a sandstone wall with buttresses. The three-winged Baroque complex, with its rectangular courtyard, housed the chapel of the opposing Franciscan monastery and a Catholic school until 1736. With Napoleon's dissolution of the ecclesiastical principalities in 1802, Fulda's rule ended. In the following ten years, the castle changed hands four times before becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1815.
