Destedt Castle

The exact date of origin of the original moated castle is unknown, but by the 12th century, it was already owned by the Counts of Wernigerode. From 1356 and 1388 respectively, the complex came into the possession of the Veltheim family. In 1430 and 1432, the castle was conquered, destroyed, and set on fire by Brunswick troops. For many centuries thereafter, it is said to have remained in ruins. Approximately 25 years after the Thirty Years' War, Joachim Ludolf von Veltheim began rebuilding the upper castle, resulting in the current Baroque palace in 1693.
