Detzel Castle, a historic hunting lodge in Saxony-Anhalt, is an example of 19th-century architecture. Originally built as a private hunting retreat, it has undergone various uses.

History+

The construction of Detzel Castle took place in 1844 as a hunting lodge. The plans for this are attributed to Carl Friedrich Schinkel, although reports also exist that name a sketch by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV as the origin. The builder was Baron Hermann von Bonin, the then owner of the Detzel estate. After his death, the castle passed into the possession of his daughter Adolphine. She donated it to Johanne Nathusius to establish a home for people with intellectual disabilities. From 1864, Detzel Castle served as an outpost of the Neinstedter Anstalten and temporarily housed over 70 residents. The official consecration of the house, initially known as "Asyl Kreuzhilfe" (Cross-Aid Asylum), took place on January 26, 1864.
