Deutschkreutz Castle

The origins of Deutschkreutz date back to 1492, when a medieval castle was first mentioned at this location. Until 1535, it was owned by the Kanizsay family before passing to the Nádasdy family through marriage. Thomas III. Nádasdy had the castle transformed into a Renaissance-style palace around 1560. The castle acquired its present form in 1625 under Paul Nádasdy, who also had the castle chapel built in 1632. Franz III. Nádasdy was later executed for a conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I, whereupon the estates fell to the Emperor. He sold them in 1676 to Count Paul Esterházy. The Princes Esterházy rarely used the castle, causing it to lose importance and become the center of an agricultural estate.
