In the Diersfordt district of Wesel is Diersfordt Castle, a historic moated castle. The complex, which dates back to a medieval castle, was rebuilt several times and, after a fire in the 20th century, was reconstructed in a simplified form. Today, it houses a hotel and a museum, among other things.

History+

The origins of Diersfordt Castle date back to the Middle Ages, with the first documented mention of the “Haus Dyrsvort” from 1334. It was initially owned by the Knights of Heessen and came into the possession of the von Wylich family through marriage. This family, which acquired the Kleve hereditary marshalship in the 15th century, shaped the complex for around 350 years. In 1498, Diersfordt was elevated to an independent lordship. During the Eighty Years' War and the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered damage from Spanish troops.
