Diessenhofen Castle

Around 1200, the original residential tower of Diessenhofen Castle was constructed. This tower, which served as the residence of the Knights of Diessenhofen, had an elevated entrance. It likely stood alone initially before a residential building was added to its north facade in the 13th century. The region was already settled in the Bronze Age, and in the 13th century, the Abbey of St. Gallen and the Counts of Kyburg controlled the area. The Kyburgs founded Diessenhofen as a fortified village with town rights in 1178 to monitor Rhine traffic and bridge tolls. The castle was the seat of their ministerials, including Heinrich de Hettlingen, who is mentioned as the first owner in 1223. After its transfer to Rudolf von Habsburg in 1264, Heinrich retained his position. His son Jean faithfully served the Habsburgs and was appointed intendant under King Albert I. Even after Albert's death in 1308, he remained loyal to the Habsburgs and was able to significantly expand his estates. In 1362, Archduke Rudolf IV spent two months at the castle. In the 15th century, the line of the Truchsesses of Diessenhofen declined, and around 1450, the property had to be sold to Austria. In 1460, after the conquest of Thurgau by the Confederates, the village bought the castle and its associated rights. Fourteen years later, it was resold to private individuals.
