History+

The first mention of a castle at this site dates back to 1103 and is attributed to a knight named Dietrich, presumed to be its builder. The Dietrichstein family initially served the Eppenstein Dukes of Carinthia. In 1166, Bamberg acquired the castle and the nearby town of Feldkirchen. The Bishops of Bamberg then granted the castle to a ministerial family who adopted the name Dietrichstein. The complex served to secure the later market town of Feldkirchen and to control the Glantal road.
