In Doberlug, Brandenburg, stands Doberlug Castle, a four-wing complex built in the Renaissance style. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when a monastery was founded on this site. Today, the castle houses a museum.

History+

The history of Doberlug Castle begins in 1165 with the founding of the Cistercian monastery Dobrilugk by Margrave Dietrich von Landsberg. For almost 400 years, the monastery shaped the region until it was dissolved and occupied by Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony in 1541. Ten years later, in 1551, Heinrich von Gersdorf built a castle on the site of the former abbot's house. Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony acquired Dobrilugk in 1623 and began expanding the castle in 1625, rebuilding the south wing in 1628. Originally planned as a hunting residence, this purpose was only realized under his son Duke Christian I of Saxony-Merseburg, who inherited the castle in 1657. Christian I completed the construction in 1676 and used it as his seat of power for one year in 1682. He also founded the town of Dobrilugk in 1661.
