Donaumünster Castle

The origins of the village of Münster, as it was called until 1923, were initially connected with Reichenau Abbey. From the 13th century, the knightly family of the Lords of Münster shaped the region; their castle on the right bank of the Danube was first documented in 1256. In 1363, the property passed to Count Ludwig the Elder of Oettingen, who sold it two years later, in 1365, to the Holy Cross Monastery in Donauwörth. Between 1720 and 1730, an abbot of this monastery had the current castle-like baroque administrative building with curvilinear gables erected. Following the secularization under Napoleon, Donaumünster fell to the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein in 1803.
