Castle Dornbach
Dornbach Castle is a moated castle in the municipality of Malta in Carinthia. The castle was first mentioned in 1462 as being in the possession of Andreas von Weißbriach. From 1639 to 1932, the estate was owned by the Counts of Lodron. Today, Dornbach Castle is still in private ownership.
Architectural Description+
The high curtain wall with loopholes from the 14th century, surrounded by a wide, tree-lined moat, encloses the castle and outbuildings. On the east side, a stone bridge leads to the castle. In front of it stand baroque stone figures of a Mary (1778) and a John of Nepomuk (1779). A modern bridge is located on the west side.
The cubic, three-story Renaissance castle from the 15th and 16th centuries emerged from the residential building of the original 14th-century castle. It has a hip roof with a roof turret and features pointed arch portals from the 15th century and chamfered stone window frames from the 16th century. The coffered ceilings were created around 1600.
