Dornburg Castle

Restoration workshop

Dornburg Castle is located in Dornburg, a district of Gommern in the Jerichower Land, Saxony-Anhalt. Originally conceived as a complex, only the central main building, the Corps de Logis, was actually built. Today, it serves as a restoration workshop and depot for archaeological finds of the state.

History+

After the Dornburg lordship reverted to the House of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1674, Prince Karl Wilhelm had a predecessor building erected. However, this burned down in 1750. Princess Johanna Elisabeth of Anhalt-Zerbst, a born Duchess of Holstein-Gottorf and sister of the Swedish King Adolf Friedrich, then took over the patronage for a new castle. In September 1750, she commissioned the master builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel with the plans. Stengel, known for his work on Biebrich Castle and the New Palace Saarbrücken, designed a horseshoe-shaped complex. Despite these plans, only the central part of the castle was completed. The project was largely implemented by Carl Wilhelm Christ from Zerbst, who was supported by Stengel through correspondence.
