Dottenwil Castle

To be privately owned

Dottenwil Castle, a historic structure, is perched on a hill in the municipality of Wittenbach in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is distinguished by its long history and changing uses, making it a remarkable testament to regional heritage.

History+

The first documented mention of the Dottenwil estate dates back to 1302. In 1543, Peter Graf built a small castle on this property. His daughter, Weibratha Graf, inherited the estate and castle in 1587; she was married to Konrad Atzenholz, who subsequently called himself “Atzenholz von Tattenweiler.” Konrad Atzenholz expanded the original small castle in 1597 with additions and corner towers. Over the following centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times. In 1807, Johann Baptist Blattmann acquired the property, built a spa house, and laid out a garden. After financial difficulties, the estate was auctioned in 1816 and purchased by Caspar Bernet. In 1886, the municipality of Wittenbach bought the castle estate to use it as a poorhouse and retirement home. A fire destroyed the spa house in 1901, which was then rebuilt in a smaller form. In 1997, the retirement home operations ceased, and the castle faced a new future.
