Drachenburg Castle

The foundation stone for Drachenburg Castle was laid in 1882. In a construction period of just two years, from 1882 to 1884, the building was erected as a residence for the stockbroker Stephan von Sarter, who was later elevated to a baron. Von Sarter never lived in the castle. After his death in 1902, the estate underwent various changes in use. In 1986, Drachenburg Castle was placed under monument protection, and in 1990, it was entrusted to the Nordrhein-Westfalen-Stiftung Naturschutz, Heimat- und Kulturpflege. Between 1995 and 2010, restoration work was carried out, largely returning the castle to its original state and transforming it into a Wilhelminian era museum with a focus on contemporary residential culture. A museum on the history of nature conservation is also housed here.
