Dragsholm Castle
Dragsholm Castle, an imposing complex on the Danish island of Zealand, is an outstanding example of a historic structure that evolved from a medieval fortress into an elegant Baroque castle. It is considered the oldest surviving secular building in Denmark and today houses a hotel, inviting visitors into its historic walls.
History+
The origins of Dragsholm Castle date back to around 1200, when it was built as a fortress for the Bishop Peter Sunesen of Roskilde. During the Middle Ages, the complex developed into Denmark's most powerful fortress and at times served as a prison. A well-known inmate was the Earl of Bothwell, who died here in 1578 after five years of imprisonment. Originally strategically located on an isthmus called Draget, which controlled access to the Odsherred peninsula, this isthmus lost its significance with the draining of the Lammefjord in the 19th century. Over the centuries, the military castle transformed into the present-day Baroque palace. The diplomat Friedrich Christian Ferdinand von Pechlin also died in this castle.
