Draßburg Castle

The origins of Draßburg Castle lie in a noble estate first mentioned in 1459. At that time, the Archbishop of Gran granted the property to Count Thomas Nádasdy, whose family incorporated it into their Sárvár dominion. In the 17th century, Count Franz Nádasdy, a royal court judge, had the building transformed and expanded into a castle. Following his execution in 1671 for conspiracy against the Habsburg ruling house, his estates, including Draßburg, were confiscated. In 1672, the complex passed to the Zichy family. Karl Count Zichy sold the castle in 1715 to the Meskó family. Around 1750, Eva Meskó initiated a Baroque redesign of the castle and the creation of a castle garden. However, after legal disputes, the property reverted to the Zichy counts in 1795. After the death of Count Nikolaus Zichy, his son Alexander sold Draßburg Castle in 1870 to the Siegendorf sugar manufacturer Konrad Patzenhofer, who had it extensively renovated. Patzenhofer's descendants are still the owners today. After looting in World War II and use as a hotel until 1987, a German businessman acquired the unused castle in 2008 and began a fundamental renovation according to historical plans.

Draßburg Castle is located in the Untergut district of the municipality of Draßburg in the Mattersburg district, situated in Burgenland, Austria. It lies at an elevation of approximately 214 m above sea level.

Draßburg Castle is currently privately owned. It has been restored after extensive renovations and serves private residential purposes.
