The moated castle Dreckburg in Bad Salzkotten rises on the eastern edge of the core town. Originally conceived as a tower castle, it is an example of territorial security by the Paderborn bishops.

History+

The construction of Dreckburg Castle is presumed to have taken place between 1347 and 1357, initiated by the Paderborn Provost Otto von Bentheim. After its completion, it was granted as a fief to the Lords of Drewer. Its strategic importance lay in controlling the border with Electoral Cologne and the Hellweg, making it a bulwark for the Paderborn territorial lords. The first documented mention as “Drecborgh” occurred in 1386, when it was held as a fief by Provost Volmar von Brenken, who supplemented the castle courtyard with a ring wall and an outer bailey.
