Duttenstein Castle

The site's origins date back to 1374, when a castle named Tuttenstain was first documented there. In 1551, Anton Fugger von der Lilie acquired the Duttenstein dominion. His second eldest son, Hans Fugger, had the current castle built between 1564 and 1572. In 1735, Eustach Maria von Fugger sold the dominion to Anselm Franz von Thurn und Taxis. A renovation took place in 1792 under Karl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis, who commissioned the Augsburg painter Johann Anton Huber to decorate several rooms. Karl Alexander von Thurn und Taxis had an approximately 500-hectare wildlife park laid out in 1817. After being occupied by the SS during the Nazi dictatorship and housing Polish Jews after 1945, the castle served as a pulmonary sanatorium from 1947 to 1975.
