In Sissach in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Ebenrain Castle is situated amidst gardens. It is considered the most significant country estate of its kind in northwestern Switzerland.

History+

The construction of Ebenrain Castle took place between 1774 and 1776. The patron was Martin Bachofen, a silk ribbon manufacturer and merchant from Basel. The designs for the castle were created by Basel architect Samuel Werenfels, while the original late Baroque garden layouts were conceived by Niklaus Sprüngli from Bern. Before 1805, the southern garden area, with the exception of a lime tree avenue, was transformed into a landscape garden. A similar transformation of the northern garden section followed between 1817 and 1821.
