Eberstein Castle

The first documented mention of Neu-Eberstein as “Novum Castrum Eberstein” dates back to 1272. It served as a residence for the Counts of Eberstein, alongside the older Alt-Eberstein Castle. Otto I of Eberstein is named as its builder. In the 16th century, the complex underwent expansion under Wilhelm IV of Eberstein, adding wells, stair towers, and a castle chapel. Under Philipp III of Eberstein in the early 17th century, a new gatehouse and additional outworks were added. After the extinction of the Eberstein line, the property passed to the Margraviate of Baden and Württemberg-Neuenstadt. Its use as a noble residence ceased, and the castle subsequently served as an administrator's dwelling. During the Nine Years' War, it provided refuge but was partially burned down in 1691 and thereafter used only as a workshop and storage.
