Ebnet Castle

Ebnet's history dates back to 1113, when St. Peter's Monastery acquired property there. A knightly family, the Schnewlin von Landeck, was mentioned as lords of Ebnet from 1348. Through a marriage in 1568, Ebnet came into the possession of the Barons von Sickingen, who built a castle as a summer residence in 1696. From 1748, the current baroque castle was constructed according to plans by Johann Jacob Fechter for Baron Ferdinand Sebastian von Sickingen-Hohenberg and adorned with works by regional baroque artists such as Christian Wentzinger and Hans Georg Gigl. Ceiling paintings by Benedikt Gambs and Johann Pfunner decorate the interiors. In 1809, the Sickingens sold the castle to the Grand Duchy of Baden, which in turn sold it in 1811 to the Barons von Gayling von Altheim, who still inhabit it today.
