Eckstedt Castle is in the municipality of Eckstedt in the Sömmerda district in Thuringia. It represents a history of destruction, reconstruction, and architectural change.

History+

The first documented mention of the municipality of Eckstedt occurred in 1191. A castle already existed on this site in the 13th century, but it was later destroyed. In 1342, the archbishop reacquired the Vitzthum office. A new castle was erected in 1440. The noble Vitzthum von Eckstedt family had the current castle rebuilt in 1556. The region suffered severely from the effects of the Thirty Years' War, and Eckstedt was also affected: in 1635, the plague claimed 121 lives, and in 1640, imperial soldiers plundered the area.
