History+
The origins of Eggenberg Castle likely date back to 971. The first documented mention occurred in 1274 when the Maierhof of Eggeberg was pledged. The castle changed hands multiple times, including the Eggenberger family, the Lords of Walsee, and the Kirchberger family. From 1524, the Fernberger family owned it, followed by the Counts of Herberstorff and Sprinzenstein. From 1651, it belonged to the Counts of Kuefstein before passing to Kremsmünster Abbey in 1680. In the early 19th century, specifically from 1803, the Forstinger family first acquired the brewery and in 1811 the castle as well. Parts of the vacant castle were demolished in 1807. The brewery, whose existence is documented since the 14th century, began commercial operation in 1681.
