Eggendobl Castle

The first documented mention of Eggendobl occurred around 1380 as a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. In 1394, Prince-Bishop Georg von Hohenlohe had the country estate extensively expanded. By the end of the 15th century, the castle was owned by the Passau patrician Vinzenz Pelchinger. In 1554, it was acquired by the princely episcopal court chancellor Aurelius Renninger, who had a house chapel added. In the early 17th century, Provost Christoph von Pötting was the owner and commissioned Francesco Garbanino in 1613 to build a castle church in the southeast. Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg bought the castle from Count Johann Franz von Thun in 1690 and moved the regional court from Veste Oberhaus here, making Eggendobl the seat of a bailiff. After the secularization in Bavaria, Baron Gugler zu Zeilhofen purchased the property in 1814.
