Eggendobl Castle

The former prince-bishop's castle Eggendobl is a castle in Passau. It stands on the left bank of the Danube below Freudenhain Castle.

Eggendobl is first mentioned around 1380 as a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. In 1394, Prince-Bishop Georg von Hohenlohe significantly expanded his country estate. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was owned by the Passau patrician Vinzenz Pelchinger. In 1554, it was acquired by the prince-bishop's court chancellor Aurelius Renninger, who had a house chapel added. At the beginning of the 17th century, Provost Christoph von Pötting was the owner of the building, who had a castle church built in the southeast by Francesco Garbanino in 1613. In 1690, Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg bought the castle from Count Johann Franz von Thun and moved the regional court from Veste Oberhaus here. The castle became the seat of a caretaker.

After the secularization in Bavaria, Baron Gugler zu Zeilhofen bought the house at auction in 1814. In 1833, the Nymphenburg porcelain turner Johann Georg Kumpf established a porcelain manufactory here, but the branch soon had to be relocated due to limited space. The castle was then converted into a residential building, and a stone figure of St. Philip was placed on the facade. During the construction of the Schanzlbrücke and its access roads in 1970, the building could be saved from demolition, but the castle church, defensive walls, and the court administrator's building were demolished, except for a painted Renaissance beam ceiling, which was moved to the Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro.
