Ehrnau Castle

Ehrnau Castle is located in the municipality of Mautern in the political district of Leoben in Upper Styria, Austria. The castle is a protected monument.

Located west of Mautern, in the immediate vicinity of the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9), the castle bears witness to the Ehrenfelser family, who erected fortifications in the valley in the 13th century. After the Ehrenfelser family, the manor was owned by the Lords of Kraig, Siegmund von Dietrichstein, and from 1564 to 1822 by the Counts Breuner. Maximilian Freiherr von Breuner received market rights for Mautern in 1633, and in 1728 Emperor Charles VI was a guest of Count Carl Adam von Breuner.

From 1882, the district commission was located in the premises because Mautern was its own judicial district. From 1885 to 1980, the castle housed an old people's and infirmary, which was based on a foundation by Franz Freiherr Mayr von Melnhof from 1883. In the interim, Ehrnau Castle housed a discotheque; it is currently vacant.
