Einersdorf Castle

The first documentary mention of the castle dates back to 1136. At that time, it was a fortified residential tower, probably built by the Lords of Wartenstein. Over the centuries, the complex was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt.

In the 16th century, under the ownership of the wealthy merchant family Fugger, the castle was transformed into a magnificent Renaissance palace. During this period, the impressive arcaded courtyard and the richly decorated state rooms were created.

In the 18th century, the castle underwent further modifications in the Baroque style. New wings were added and the gardens were redesigned. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle served various purposes, including as a military hospital and a school.

Today, the castle houses a museum that presents the history of the building and the region. It is also a popular venue for cultural events and weddings.

The castle is a multi-winged complex with elements from various architectural epochs. The oldest parts date back to the Romanesque period, while the most striking features are from the Renaissance and Baroque.

The inner courtyard with its three-story arcades is one of the most beautiful examples of Renaissance architecture in the region. The columns and arches are richly decorated with sculptures and reliefs.

The castle chapel, dedicated to St. Michael, is a jewel of Baroque art. It features an opulent altar, impressive ceiling frescoes, and valuable stucco work.

The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens, which were laid out in the Baroque style. They include geometrically arranged flowerbeds, fountains, and sculptures, as well as a romantic English landscape garden.

According to an old legend, the ghost of a "White Lady" roams the castle at night. She is said to be the spirit of a former castle inhabitant who died tragically.

Another story tells of a secret passage that is said to connect the castle with a nearby monastery. This passage was supposedly used in times of danger to escape unnoticed.

The castle museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except Mondays.

Guided tours are offered daily at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Special tours for groups can be booked in advance.

Most parts of the castle are wheelchair accessible. An elevator is available for access to the upper floors.

The castle was owned by Maximilian Jabornegg von Gamsenegg around 1600. Around 1640, ownership passed to Georg Leonhard von Staudacher.
