Eisenbach Castle (Frischborn)
Eisenbach Castle is a complex first mentioned in a document in 1217, located about three kilometers south of Lauterbach in the Vogelsberg.
The castle was held by the Eisenbach family as a fief from the Counts of Ziegenhain. In 1269, it was destroyed by Fulda Prince-Abbot Bertho II von Leibolz. The feudal knight Eisenbach rebuilt it within ten years. After the Eisenbach family died out in 1429, the Riedesel family (Barons of Eisenbach and Hessian Hereditary Marshals) received the fief, in whose possession it remains to this day.
Eisenbach Castle consists of an old core castle and a bailey separated by a moat, and in its current form dates from the 16th century. Of the original castle, in addition to the ring wall, the pentagonal keep and parts of the wall in the core castle are preserved.
