Eisfeld Castle stands in Eisfeld, Thuringia. Originally a manor house dating back to the 9th century, the castle today serves as a cultural center and houses a museum.

History+

The origins of Eisfeld Castle trace back to around 800 AD, when an early manor house was mentioned at this site. In the 12th century, the keep was constructed. Ownership of the property changed hands frequently: In 1353, it passed to Burgrave Albrecht of Nuremberg, then in 1374 to the Margraves of Meissen, and later to the Dukes of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Various parts of the building were added, including the Kemenate around 1360, the kitchen wing in 1555, and the New Building around 1580. The castle suffered destruction in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War due to a fire, but was subsequently rebuilt. After 1680, it served as a widow's residence, district court, and prison.
