Elberberg Castle

The origins of the estate date back to 1235, when a Gothic predecessor castle was first documented. In 1266, it was sold to the St. Alban Abbey in Mainz. Later, in 1386, the Lords of Elben received the castle as a fief. A stone extension from the 15th century, still visible today, complemented by a round, external staircase from 1583. After the extinction of the Elben family in 1535, the property passed into joint ownership, first to Jakob von Taubenheim, then to the Lords of Boyneburg-Hohenstein and the Lords of Buttlar. The Buttlar family acquired the Boyneburgers' share of the castle in 1559 and has owned it ever since.
