Elisabethenburg Palace in Meiningen, Thuringia, once served as the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen. Its architecture, when viewed from above, resembles the letter “E”.

History+

Duke Bernhard I of Saxe-Meiningen had Elisabethenburg Palace built between 1682 and 1692. It was erected on the site of the former Würzburg Castle Meiningen. The E-shape of the floor plan is often interpreted as a tribute to his wife Elisabeth Eleonore of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, although architecturally it results from the combination of a central tower with a three-wing complex. Original plans for a symmetrical layout with additional tower roofs were not fully implemented. Stones from the ruins of Landeswehre Castle, among others, were used for its construction.
