History+

In the Middle Ages, Ellingshausen was a fief of the County of Henneberg-Schleusingen. In 1350, the locality passed to the Lords of Herda, thereby detaching it from the Amt Maßfeld, as jurisdiction fell to the local nobility. The castle changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the families of Schaumberg, von Wechmar, von Meusa, von Herda, and von Bose. The latter had the complex rebuilt, a project completed in 1804. After World War II, in 1945, the von Bose family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists.
