Ellwangen Castle

History+
The origins of Ellwangen Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a castle was built around 1200, first documented in 1266. From 1460, the complex served as a residence for the Prince-Provosts. Between 1603 and 1608, under Prince-Provost Johann Christoph von Westerstetten, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle, creating the arcaded inner courtyard and the four corner towers. Following a fire in 1720, the castle was rebuilt in Baroque style under Prince-Provost Franz Ludwig von der Pfalz.
