Elmischwang Castle

Elmischwang Castle is situated on a gently rising meadow slope towards the Neufnach, south of the road between Fischach and Wollmetshofen, a district belonging to the market town of Fischach in the Augsburg district. The three-story castle was built in 1902/03, commissioned by Alexander Freiherr von Aufseß, by the Munich architect Johann Rieperdinger in a blend of Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau.

The Elmischwang manor belonged as a fief in the late Middle Ages to the Collegiate Church of St. Moritz in Augsburg. From 1472, Hans Kirchtorf was the feudal lord. At the end of the 15th century, one third of the estate belonged to Martha von Freyberg. Finally, in 1528, it came into the possession of Raymund Fugger. From the 17th century onwards, several owners followed. These included, among others, the noble patrician families from Augsburg, von Schnurbein and von Stetten.

Christoph David von Stetten was the first owner to inhabit the pleasure house belonging to the estate during the summer months, which he had expanded into a castle in 1796. Furthermore, he redesigned the park and arranged for the conversion of the economy building into a greenhouse. In 1875, Elmischwang came into the possession of the baronial family von Aufseß. In 1894/95, Hugo von Aufseß had Villa Lehnersberg built on a wooded slope northeast of the castle.

Alexander Freiherr von Aufseß is the builder of the present castle, with its characteristic four 'Nuremberg corner oriels' ... paying tribute to the Franconian origin of the builder. The Augsburg gardener Johann Schäfer was commissioned with the redesign of the castle park.

Since 1946, the Freiherrlich von Aufseß'sches retirement home has been housed in the castle and its associated outbuildings. A renovation of the entire area, begun in 1970, was completed in 1999/2000 with a modern extension to the retirement home (the foundation stone for which was laid by Karin Stoiber).
