Emmersdorf Castle
Emmersdorf Castle is located in the village of Emmersdorf, in the Wölfnitz district of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
When the first building was erected on this site is unknown. In 1136, the name Harold de Zemramsdorf appears in a document, which could indicate a medieval manor, but the name does not appear in any further documents in the following centuries. It was not until the years 1569 to 1613 that the Emmersdorf estate appeared as property of the Kulmer von Rosenbichl. Subsequently, the owners usually changed in rapid succession. The physician and politician Adolf Fischhof lived and died in Emmersdorf Castle in 1893. From 1899 to 1902, the property was owned by the Wiener Allgemeine Versorgungsanstalt.
The castle is now privately owned. In summer, it is occasionally open for cultural events and tours.
Description+
The castle is an elongated, three-story building on a rectangular floor plan, which has been fundamentally altered several times throughout its history. The south-facing facade has eleven window axes and a tower-like bay, the uppermost floor of which has been converted into a veranda. On both sides of the building there is a projecting corner tower with a dome-shaped helmet. The third floor, added only in the 19th century, is provided with a mansard roof. During this renovation, the previously applied window decoration was removed.
