Engelsegg Castle, a castle complex dating back to around 1500, is located in the Upper Austrian city of Steyr. Originally known as Teufelsegg, it has Renaissance architecture.

History+

The exact construction date of Engelsegg Castle is not recorded, but a residence at this location is mentioned as early as the 13th century. The presumed builder is the cloth merchant Hans Fuchsberger, who also served as mayor of Steyr in 1525 and 1526. In 1641, Josef Achtmarkt von Achtmarktstein, himself mayor from 1642 to 1645, acquired the property. He had it redesigned in the Renaissance style and in 1642 applied to Emperor Ferdinand III for the renaming of Teufelsegg to Engelsegg. The original name Teufelsegg referred to the Teufelsbach stream, which flows partly underground.
