Englburg Castle

The hilltop castle was constructed in 1396 by Wilhelm von Puchberg, who named it “Engelburch.” By 1426 at the latest, it came into the possession of the von Schwarzenstein family. After 1579, additions were made under master builder Siegmund Aug. With the death of Hans Wolf von Schwarzenstein in 1599 and the marriage of his sister to Burghard von Taufkirchen in 1617, the Taufkirchner family, elevated to count status in 1684, became the new owners. In the 17th century, Englburg received its ogee domes, and a brewery was established in the south wing, operating until 1900. In 1742, Pandurs devastated the castle. In 1774, Anton Gärtler, a master builder from Passau, constructed a staircase adorned with a fresco and simultaneously added the servants' wing.
