Entenfang Castle

The hunting lodge Entenfang, located on the southern outskirts of Berzdorf in the city of Wesseling and adjacent to the Entenfang nature reserve, is now used as a daycare center after multiple renovations and conversions.

Until secularization, the house served as a hunting lodge for the provosts of St. Gereon in Cologne, who owned property in Berzdorf, particularly for duck hunting using decoys. Whether the house, or a new construction or renovation, or at least its ownership, can be attributed to Clemens August of Bavaria, is highly doubted by recent historiography. In any case, it existed before 1735. The house originally included farm buildings and a manor farm, each built at right angles around a courtyard. As early as 1797, the house was threatened with decay. The first tenant of the domain estate in 1797 was then a Breuer family from Berzdorf, who made the house habitable again. The restored two-story house had five window axes and a hip roof. Around 1900, the now privatized house was converted into a manor house, extended to the east, and provided on the east side with baroque-looking turrets and bay windows and a front staircase, as well as a terrace structure with an external staircase added to a corner of the rear facade. Today, the old oak ceiling beams on the upper floor and the staircase with false balusters are still striking.
