Entenstein Castle

The precise origins of Entenstein Castle cannot be definitively dated, but its use at this location by Walter von Schliengen is mentioned as early as 821. A residential tower may have stood here around the year 1000. In the 13th century, Rudolf von Üsenberg was known as its owner. A transformation into a castle occurred in 1525 by the Nagel von der Alten Schönstein family. In 1725, Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad II von Reinach-Hirtzbach acquired the property, which subsequently served as the seat of the Schliengen bailiwick of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Following its incorporation into Baden in 1805, it became the seat of the Oberamt. The Counts of Andlau carried out alterations after 1857. Count Oktav von Andlau, the last owner of this line, passed away in 1961 and bequeathed the castle to the Jesuit Order, which had no use for the building.
