Erbach Castle
Erbach Castle stands on a hill not far from the town of Erbach in the Alb-Donau district. The building is a patrician Renaissance castle, which is now owned by the Barons zu Ulm-Erbach.
The hill, now known as Schlossberg, was already built with a castle before the construction of the current castle, to secure the formerly important Danube crossing. After several changes of ownership, in 1534 the fiefdom of Erbach was transferred to Hans von Paumgarten from an Augsburg patrician family. The construction of the visible castle today was begun in 1550 by Hans Georg von Paumgarten and completed around 1555.
In 1612, Hans Ludwig von Ulm became the feudal lord of Erbach. A pleasure garden, which no longer exists today, was added after the Thirty Years' War. Due to the residence of the Barons von Ulm in Günzburg, almost no alterations were made from the 18th century onwards, so that the current external appearance corresponds to that of the mid-16th century.

The castle is closely modeled on the patrician architecture of the cities, with the stepped gables and gabled roofs being particularly indicative of this. Access is classically via a drawbridge with an adjoining gatehouse. The subsequent castle courtyard is surrounded by stables and outbuildings. A draw well is located within it. At the end of the great hall is the baroque castle chapel.
Several rooms can be reached via the staircase. The Renaissance room was last altered in 1884. In addition to it, the Small Smoking Room, the Maria-Theresia Salon, the Brown Salon, the Red Salon, and an Ecclesiastical Salon are also worth mentioning.
Part of the premises is used by a restaurant, and the castle's cellar is used as a theater.
