Erching Castle

Erching Castle was built around 1400 by the Prince-Bishopric of Freising. The current building received its shape under Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund around 1652, and the chapel was re-consecrated to Saint Walburga in 1672. The castle and chapel still present themselves today as the court painter Valentin Gappnigg painted them for Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Eckher in 1699. Already at that time, a wide, round moat surrounded this ensemble, which is barely visible in the painting. The old outbuildings were demolished in the 19th century by subsequent owners. After the secularization, the entire Erching estate was auctioned off on August 4, 1803, as a "dilapidated and unusable country castle" by Gotthard Schmid.

In 1829, Privy Councillor Joseph von Utzschneider acquired the Erching estate and established a model farm there, where he introduced potato and beet cultivation and operated a sugar factory. After that, the owners changed several times until Josef Selmayr bought the Erching estate. This event is recorded in the stained-glass window to the right of the chapel entrance.

"In the year 1898, on May 1st, Josef Selmayr from Bogenhausen, District Administrator of Upper Bavaria and Municipal Commissioner of the Capital and Residence City of Munich, acquired this castle from the relics of the Barons von Münch."

Since that time, the Erching estate has been in the possession of the Selmayr family for 5 generations.
